Formed in 1965 around London, England, Pink Floyd is known for its progressive and psychedelic music. The band is known for its philosophical lyrics, experimentation, extended compositions, and elaborate live shows. It is these qualities that have made them one of the most commercially successful and influential groups in popular music history. Pink Floyd was inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. They have sold over 250 million records worldwide.
Pink Floyd released their seventh studio album, Dark Side of the Moon, in 1973. Since then, it’s been regarded as one of the greatest rock albums of all time because of its timeless themes of regret, greed, and death.
Its legacy has also been upheld by the album’s iconic cover, which was designed by the founding members of the English art collective Hipgnosis, Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell, as well as English illustrator George Hardie. The band’s keyboardist, Richard Wright, asked the group to do something “clean, elegant and graphic,” and they delivered with the unmistakable prism, which is symbolic of the record’s story and lyrics.
